"Almost everybody uses a smartphone, so I thought it would be fun to challenge people to create an artwork that is the same size and shape as their phone, but made of canvas, and taking us away from the screen, as a kind of digital detox. Our experience of each other and of art, has become flat, small and owned by big tech. This is also a protest against AI art – AI can copy photos but it can’t create these artworks – every artist has made something completely unique, and handcrafting is a contrast with the environmentally-destructive data centres being built."
